The Project activity will involve the introduction of HHFOT1, which is a type of oil/water emulsion technology developed by Bio Energy, at an existing grid connected (fuel oil fired) 165 MW power plant in ???, Pakistan to increase energy efficiency. It is expected that up to 30% less fuel oil will be consumed by the plant due to higher combustion efficiency of fuel and reduced heat loss through lower air intake. The project is to forecast to generate approximately 150,870 tC02/yr of emission reduction.
HHFOT technology is incorporated into the existing fuel supply system, in-between the fuel oil tank and the service tank. Oil/water emulsion is prepared by mixing water and a special additive2 with oil in such a way that water particles are homogeneously suspended in the oil in the form of micro-water capsules (10 -30 µm in diameter). The prepared oil/water emulsion is then directed to the power plant.
The Project will have a high sustainable development value be transferring foreign oil/water emulsion technology to Pakistan. Staff at the power plant will be trained in the use and maintenance of the oil/water emulsion equipment. It is expected that additional local staff will also be employed to help run the project's oil/water emulsion equipment.
Additionally, local atmospheric air pollution such as NOx and SOx will be reduced through the project activity. There is also a large reduction in the density of smoke produced by the power plant.
It is expected that foreign capital will be used to purchase the oil/water emulsion. This will result in the injection of foreign currency into the Pakistan economy. Furthermore, greater energy efficiency and less fuel use will mean that imports of oil can be reduced.
